Newtown - Powys
Despite its name, Newtown is a long established agricultural and industrial town on the banks of the River Severn in Powys, Mid Wales. Although rural, the town is well connected, including a regular direct rail service to Birmingham. By car, London is reached in three and a half hours, Birmingham in one and a half, Manchester and Liverpool in two and Cardiff, the Welsh Capital, in a little over two hours. For the outdoor types, scenic Snowdonia lies just to the north and offers many exciting activities including rock climbing and mountain biking. An hour’s drive west takes you to the Ceredigion coast and all it offers by way of sailing, windsurfing etc. Newtown is surrounded by gentle hills and rich rolling farmland, ideal for walking.
The practice has 14,100 patients, of which 3,600 are dispensed to.
As well as core general medical services, we provide an extensive range of enhanced services, including a minor injury service for patients living in or visiting the area.
We are very much a forward-thinking practice, employing a wide-range of clinical staff who work at the ‘coal face’ as part of our team. These include Advanced Paramedics, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Physician Associates, a Pharmacist and a Physiotherapist. Working together as a team, they see ‘on the day’ patients, undertake home visits, perform minor illness clinics and assist with telephone triage. We currently use the EMIS clinical system, but are soon to migrate to the Microtest system.
We have access to the community hospital in Newtown, utilising its radiology department. Patients requiring admission for secondary care are mainly sent to district general hospitals in Shrewsbury, Telford, Aberystwyth and Wrexham.
